Human Gender (Sex) Selection
New Advances Offer Guaranteed Results
Recent advances in the fields of genetics, genetic diagnosis, embryo biopsy and preimplantation genetic diagnosis (PGD) have opened up a new world of opportunity for couples interested in achieving a healthy pregnancy. As a result of safe new techniques developed to allow physicians and scientists the opportunity to study the genetic well being of an embryo PRIOR to it's return to the womb, procedures such as guaranteed sex selection have become a reality. Employing embryo biopsy, couples undertaking in vitro fertilization are afforded the opportunity of knowing the gender of each embryo prior to the decision concerning which embryos shall be returned to the womb and which shall be safely stored for a later date. Clearly, if scientists are aware of the sex of an embryo while it remains still in their care, measures can be taken to assure that only embryos of a selected gender are returned to the womb for the possible establishment of pregnancy. While in vitro fertilization with PGD is only one of the methods for sex predetermination offered by our Center, it is the only procedure where success rates are higher than 99.9%.

HOUSTON: Tom and Linda contacted our center in early 2008 with an interest in achieving a healthy male pregnancy. The couple, in their late-30s had no problem becoming pregnant in the past and had successfully delivered 3 girls over the past 8 years. Tom had 2 brothers who had also produced a total of 5 girls and 1 boy in their own families and Tom was concerned about the apparent gender imbalance being demonstrated by he and his brothers. Tom and Linda entered our program in February, 2008. Tom and Linda live just outside of Houston. We contacted a local Houston fertility center that we work with. The center graciously agreed to assist us in the 3 week preparation of Tom and Linda for the IVF-PGD gender selection program scheduled to take place in our Los Angeles facility. Linda produced 7 healthy eggs which were fertilized in the laboratory with Tom's sperm. 2 healthy male embryos were returned to Linda five days later. The couple returned home as we made arrangemtns for their ongoing 2 weeks of monitoring at home in anticipation of a pregnancy test. Twelve days after returning home, Linda called and indicated that she "couldn't wait" the full 2 weeks and purchased a home pregnancy test at the pharmacy. She advised us the test was "very positive". Linda's home test results were confirmed the next day and Linda and Tom went on to deliver a single, healthy little boy in late 2008.

FORT LAUDERDALE: David and Samantha contacted our New York office requesting information about their possible suitability for our IVF-PGD gender selection program. This was a second marriage for each of them. Samantha had previously delivered 2 healthy boys in her first marriage and undertook a tubal ligation following the birth of her second son. David had one son from a prior marriage. The couple were concerned about the impact of the prior tubal ligation on their chances of achieving a little girl. Our New York staff reassued them that prior tubal ligation would have essentially no negative impact on their chances for success. Because IVF-PGD employs in vitro fertilization, the fallopian tubes become, in nearly all instances, a "non-issue". We worked with a fertility center in south Florida near David and Samantha's home to carry out baseline blood and x-ray studies to assure their suitablity for our program as well as to assure that the tubal ligation had not in any way had an impact on their chances for success. Two months after first contacting us a single, healthy female embryo was returned to Samantha after a successful egg retrieval. David and Samantha are now the proud parents of the little girl they were so concerned about achieving.

SINGAPORE:

Sharon and Kevin from Singapore had a friend in Los Angeles contact us on their behalf. Sharin, Kevin and their 2 daughters were planning a summer trip to Los Angeles and were interested in knowing if it would be possible to coordinate their travel schedule to allow for both an IVF-PGD gende selection cycle as well as a family visit to Disneyland and other nearby Los Angeles attractions. We explained that when given enough advance notice, we are able to very accurately control the timing of the fertility treatments that lead up to the gender selection procedure and that in nealry all instances, family vacations can be combined with our treatment protocols. Sharon and Kevin contacted us a short while later and explained the details of their travel plans. They were interested in achieving a male offspring to balance their family with what they had decided would be one final child. We contacted one of the several programs that we work with in Singapore and made arrangements for all of the preliminary testing to be carried out locally in Singapore. An initial transfer of 2 healthy male embyos was carried out during the family visit to Los Angeles.. 2 weeks after returning home, we learned of a negative pregnancy test result. Shaorn and Kevin had frozen 2 additional male embryos resulting from their first treatment course. They expressed an interest in utilizing these embroys and 3 months later, Sharon returned to receive the remaining male embryos. Sharon spend 72 hours with us in Los Angeles and the two cryopreserved embryos were thawed and returnd to Sharon. Two weeks after returning home, we were notified by the local fertility center of success. Sharon had a positive pregnancy test. 2 weeks after that, we learned of the successful implantation of both embryos and that Sharon was expecting twin boys.
